The blessing of this recipe is it’s simplicity.
This recipe is also incredibly versatile! Change the flavor by using maple sausage, spicy sausage, turkey sausage…if you can crumble it, you can add it to this sausage gravy!
Take the sausage out and now you have a basic cream gravy, perfect for Chicken Fried Steak!
The trick here is to leave the grease from the sausage in the pan and incorporate that into your roux. Season generously with salt and pepper and expect rave reviews!
Creamy Sausage Gravy
Ingredients:
- 1 (12 ounce) package flavored sausage
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups whole milk
- salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
- Crumble and cook sausage in a deep pan. Remove sausage from pan. Do not clean pan
- Add your butter to the pan stir until just melted. Add flour.
- Cook flour until fully incorporated with butter and stir until smooth.
- Add milk little by little, stirring consistently.
- Season with salt and pepper and heat to a high simmer (not a full blown boil though unless you want gravy to pop in your eye!)
- Lower heat and add sausage, heat through for 12-15 minutes. Stirring often.
