Spending time on the open road with a car full of kids is enough to try anyone’s patience if you don’t have some things for them to do. Unfortunately, packing extra when you are heading out on a long trip is not always an option.
When you find yourself faced with such a problem, road trip games for kids can be a huge asset. These games allow kids to have a great time, stay totally focused and out of your hair for the ride.
Here are some great road trip game ideas that you can use to keep your kids occupied and happy:
I Spy with My Little Eye
What kid hasn’t played this classic game. The best part of this game is that it can be limited to inside the car. There are plenty of things inside the car to “spy” and it can keep kids occupied for hours. Spend some time spying with them to make the game extra special. This game is great for the younger kids that struggle with some of the tougher road trip games.
The License Plate Game
There are countless variations of this game but they all have the same premise…check license plates, signs, road maps and anything else to complete the alphabet. Some variations require you find a word that starts with each letter, while others require that the letter be on a license plate. Whichever choice you make, this is one game that can pass the time quickly. It is great for all ages.
Sing-a-Longs
Again, you can change this up a million ways. Some popular games involving singing include the multi-verse variation where one person begins and another comes in with the same thing one line into the song. This creates a fun game that is tough to maintain without messing up. You can also make up a song to a familiar tune or simply blast your favorites as a group. Singing is wonderful and all ages will enjoy it although some will need a little prodding to join in at first.
Car Bingo
This does require some Bingo cards and supplies, but man is it a good time. The Bingo supplies are very minimal and can be done electronically if you have a tablet or laptop. Few games will pass the time like a good old fashioned game of car bingo. You can also play a variation that instead of letters, calls out finding certain things on the road. These items might be trailers, a particular fast food restaurant or a certain color car. When you find these items out on the road, you get to mark that block on your card.
20 Questions
The old classic is still the greatest road trip game for kids and adults alike. Simply think of a person, place or thing and everyone else gets 20 questions to try to figure out what you chose. They can ask anything that can be answered with a yes or a no. This game has been a favorite for a very long time and it is easy to see why. It is loads of fun, anyone can play it and it requires nothing but an investigative brain.
These road trip games for the kids are a wonderful way to enjoy the ride. Keeping them engaged and occupied is also good for their mindset and will keep the mood jovial and fun. Next time you head out for a long ride in the car, give these games a try!
