Looking for tasty summer dishes? Grilling season is upon us! I don’t know about you, but the days we can use the grill and eat outside feel like a real treat to me. Well, until it’s 100+ degrees outside!
In the 100+ degree Texas summers, meals we can heat up FAST are a “hot” commodity (get it? 😉 ) around here.
We’re a big fan of grilling up some hamburgers or hot dogs and throwing some potato salad and some fruit on our plates for a quick and easy summer dishes!
Did you know that during Hot Dog Season, which is between Memorial Day through Labor Day, Americans eat about 7 billion hot dogs, according to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council. That’s about 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that season! Yikes! We happily contribute to that statistic!
That said, I am picky when it comes to hot dogs! No $.88 special for me. My favorite are the Park’s Finest™ Frankfurters from Ball Park®. They come in 3 flavors – Signature Seasoned, Cracked Dijon Mustard and Slow Smoked Hickory.
Yesterday was our last day of spring baseball (Third place…GO Astro’s! ) and I knew I wanted a fun easy dinner out by the pool tonight (no more rushed sandwiches while running out the door for 2 1/2 hour games and/or practicese!), so I decided we’d have one of our first summer dishes of the season!
I found this great coupon: Save $0.55 on any ONE (1) Park’s Finest Product …on the Randall’s website, and ran out to grab a pack! Randall’s is just a hop, skip and a jump away, so thankfully Randall’s regularly saves dinner time for us!
Another thing I’m picky about though? REALLY good buns!
Thanks to my bread machine, even homemade hot dog buns can be quick and easy (and made in advance! AND frozen!). I’ll post the recipe for these lovely buns at the end of this post!
And since 98% of all hot dogs are eaten with condiments (the number #1 condiment is mustard (A&U study) ), you know we have to have some topping on our Park’s Finest™ Frankfurters from Ball Park® and homemade hot dog bun!
My condiments of choice are ketchup and some sauerkraut mixed with a bit of mustard and slightly heated up. YUM!
Ball Park has some GREAT grilling tips I know you’ll be interested in!
At Ball Park, we know quite a few things about grilling. Here are few tips for perfecting your dogs on the grill:
Spray it before you lay it: Before laying hot dogs on the grill, be sure to spray the grill with vegetable oil or cooking spray to ensure the food doesn’t stick to the grates as it’s cooked.
Don’t lose the juice: Use tongs rather than a fork to gently turn franks and handle as little as possible. Do not cut or pierce the hot dogs while they are grilling or those delicious juices may be lost.
Get the “smoky” flavor – If you prefer your hot dogs to have a smoky taste, keep the grill completely covered while cooking.
Dress the dog: Have lots of fun toppings ready for your guests to use to top the hot dog – everything from the traditional mustard and ketchup to grilled veggies, chili & cheese or even sour cream.
Always “dress the dog,” not the bun
Condiments should be applied in the following order: wet condiments like mustard and chili are applied first, followed by chunky condiments like relish, onions and sauerkraut, followed by shredded cheese, followed by spices, like celery salt or pepper

Homemade Hot Dog Buns Recipe
adapted for the bread machine from this AllRecipes recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup butter (melted)
- 4 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 (.25 oz) package of instant yeast
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 egg
Directions:
- Add all ingredients to your bread maker per your breadmaker’s instructions (I have this brand of breadmaker and love it!). Turn it on the dough cycle. *NOTE: I did beat the egg first and kind of mixed it with the dry ingredients. Not sure if that was necessary, but it works well.
- After the dough cycle is over, split your dough into 16 balls and roll them out to 4×6 inch (approx) rectangles. Roll up the rectangles long ways into a roll and tuck in the ends.
- Allow the dough to rise on a greased baking sheet for 20-25 minutes.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes at 400 degrees.
- Slice and serve!

I love all those different flavors. What a great way to make a frankfurter a little bit better:) #client
I love homemade hot dog buns! I Can’t wait to give this one a try! #client
I made my own buns too – they are so much better than store bought, aren’t they? A great hot dog deserves a great bun!
